Astrology 101: Explaining Sun Signs, Moon Signs and Rising Signs

You probably know by now that I’m an astrology fan. If you don’t believe me, check out my blogs about astrology here:

Astrology is the skill of interpreting the placement and movement of the planets; it is similar to a cosmic weather report. It’s all in the stars.

To learn more about astrology, you can get a birth chart to find out exactly where the stars and planets were when you were born.

Your birth chart will include:

  • Your star sign

  • Your sun sign

  • Your moon sign

  • Your rising sign

  • And much more!

A lot of people are familiar with star signs, but you may not be aware of the rest, so I’m here to explain it.

What are star signs?

Star signs or zodiac signs are the ones where your horoscopes come from. There are 12 signs; Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Capricorn. Your star sign is decided by your date of birth. They are super useful to be aware of as they can shed some light on your personality traits.

So what is a sun sign?

The sun orbits the astrological calendar every month, meaning that wherever the sun was on the astrological wheel at your time of birth is your sun sign. It will be one of the zodiac signs and will give a greater insight into the way you look at life and energy.

The Sun is one of the most important of the planets, as it is a ruling planet. This means it influences a big part of your personality. It generally relates to life and energy - It's the centre of the solar system.

What’s a moon sign?

In the same way, wherever the moon was on the astrology calendar at the time of your birth gives you your moon sign. It transits through the astrological calendar every 3-4 days, so your friend who was born in the same month, may not have the same moon sign as you.

The moon is another ruling planet. It is the opposite of the sun, as it comes out at night, instead of the day! The moon relates to and protects our deepest emotions and needs.

What is a rising sign?

Rising signs are all about your time of birth- the time you rose into the world, or more specifically the hour you were born in relation to your sun sign. For example, if your sun sign is Aries and you were born between 6 am-8 am, then you’d be a Taurus rising.

Your rising relates to your social personality and your outward self. For example, if you’re a Leo rising, you’re likely to be extroverted and more confident in social situations.

You can remember these signs easily:

Sun - dependant on your month of birth

Moon- dependant on your date of birth

Rising - dependant on your time of birth
