The Moon and Your Mood

The Moon and Your Mood

Hello Everyone!

So far, we have been reminded of what the lunar cycle is, the effect it has on nature, and our sleep. Whether we can physically see the Moon or not, we know its influence is always around us! One of the most prominent ways I see this is in our moods.

From the Pull of a New Moon…

Of course, we cannot talk about the effects of the moon without discussing New Moon energy. It is the most compelling combination of being high in emotional sensitivity - yet low in energy. Your emotions will be harder to control during a New Moon and all those feelings you’ve bottled up in the past month will be pulled out of you. This stage of the cycle is your emotional reset to begin anew, just like the cycle of the moon.  The New Moon will cleanse all of those pent-up, stagnant emotions and leave room for something new!

Another interesting effect is the darkness we experience during a New Moon. It is a natural sleep inducer and will have us feeling more tired than usual. So while you experience this emotional recalibration, try to prioritize rest. As an astrologist, I would suggest that you use the influence of the New Moon is a time for self-reflection as it’s the ideal time for introversion activities and recuperation.

The Lunar cycle takes around a month to complete, and during those transitional periods, waxing and waning, we will continue to feel this celestial’s “tug-of-war” on our emotions.

During the Waxing phase, we can often feel an increase in motivation and clarity. As the Moon’s appearance grows more and more full by the night, we will also grow in our ambition and energy. Take advantage of the Waxing Moon energy as I had mentioned in my recent blog Moon  Cycles, and start something new. However, keep in mind that with this high in mental energy, comes a low in emotional energy. Be sure to take a moment and check-in with yourself and your emotions as burnout is a common side effect of the Waxing and Full Moon phases. Take time to pause and observe.

To the Push of the Full Moon…

The Full Moon is the energy source that legends are made of, and rightfully so! It is when the Moon is at its strongest and brightest. It is beautiful, mesmerizing, and will illuminate a new side to you. This could either be a positive or negative thing as you may release more impulsive, emotionally-charged energy that oftentimes can overwhelm us. You may feel the itch to get out of bed and be social, perhaps even anxious and it will be sure to cause a sleepless night. Sleep loss and irritability are common natural reactions to the bright light of a Full Moon so make sure to have ample distractions to tire you out. I recommend journaling to keep track of your thoughts and emotions (if journaling is something you're new to, be sure to have this blog on tab during a Full Moon).

The emotions you may feel after a Full Moon are what I consider an “emotional or energy crash”. If the Full Moon is considered the peak of energy then the Waning phase is our cool-off period. The waning phase will have you feeling gratuitous and satiated but calm. Use this time to retreat into our places of comfort as we await a New Moon. To boost your “happiness hormones” during this stage,  I recommend that you eat well, meditate, and keep in touch with those who have relaxing energy.

The Moon’s connection with our emotions is always present. All we need to do is look up to see it! Use it as a reminder to embrace the phase you are in, no matter if you are feeling whole, beautiful, or awaiting a new beginning!
