What is the Moon Cycle?

What is the Moon Cycle?

Hello!

This month I would like to focus on all things astrology and the Moon. The Moon is such a powerful source of energy, and by following its cycles - we can see how it affects everything around us, from nature to even our moods.

So let’s talk Astronomy and define what moon cycles are, and why they’re important…

The Moon Cycle is the journey in which the moon encircles the earth. The light from the sun will relocate depending on where the moon is in the duration of its path around the earth. The whole cycle from beginning to end takes roughly a month (around 30 days) to complete, and then it begins again.

This fractioning sunlight causes 8 phases:

  • New Moon

  • Waxing crescent

  • First Quarter

  • Waxing Gibbous

  • Full Moon

  • Waning Gibbous

  • Third Quarter

  • Waning Crescent

In Astrology, the eight phrases are condensed into four, from New, Waxing, Full, and Waning. Each phase has its own meaning and affects us in different ways. I am sure we have all heard about the Full Moon, as there is so much magic surrounding it (especially near certain holidays like Halloween!), but there is so much more to it than superstition.

New Moon: The start of every cycle begins with a New Moon. The Moon in this phase is directly in between the Sun and the Earth, giving it a shadowed appearance as no light is reflecting off of it. Astrologically, this is the best time to start new projects, open new connections, and begin a new chapter for the month.

Waxing Moons: Encompasses the waxing crescent, first quarter, and waxing gibbous as the moon grows and more sunlight is reflected off its surface. As the Moon's visibility increases, so does its elemental power. Waxing moons often fuel our energy and give us a sense of productivity. However, be careful with burnout and use its influence wisely!

Full Moon: We have all read a story set underneath a Full Moon. The mystery, the magic, the legends - but what does it really mean? The Full Moon comes in many “colors” throughout the year such as Blue (take a look if you have ever wondered it’s called a Blue Moon!), Red, and even Pink. However, the meaning stays constant regardless of the color it is called: the Full Moon is the pinnacle of the cycle. The Full Moon is also when the Moon’s power is at its strongest, and the boundaries between the otherworldly and us are at their thinnest. You may feel ready to take on the world but try not to let it go to your head too quickly, there are still a lot more cycles to go through!

Waning Moons: The waning phases are when the Moon is turning further away from the Sun, making its reflection appears smaller and smaller. This is also usually when the moon's elemental power becomes less prominent. As a result, we may feel slightly sluggish, or unmotivated. However, keep in mind that this is also an opportunity for rest. Try to resolve the things you have started and find a support system to lean in on.

… And then we return once more to the New Moon.

Of course, there is so much more to it than just these 4 phases. The moon’s power and influence also depend on which planet or zodiac they fall under (we will discuss this later on!) and many other elements.

Let’s learn about how astrology and the moon can help us be our best, most authentic selves.
