What are the 5 Types of Self-Love?

We have covered the basic principles of what self-love means and why it’s important. Now, let’s discuss the different types of self-love there are, and how we can hone in and nurture it.

Why is this so important? Because truly knowing what areas of self-love you need to cultivate will help you better express your needs and relate better to others. For example, those needing to grow their social self-love may need to practice empowering themselves to set boundaries and say no to others when things don’t resonate. For others, it could be building self-esteem and transforming their self-perspective. 

So, here are the types of self-love and the internal characteristics that they are associated with: 

Physical Self-Love:

Key Characteristics: Self-Care and Nutrition

We only have one body in this life and it is so important that we care, love, and appreciate it. Your legs have carried you a long way. Your face and skin have felt the tug of so many smiles. Taking care of yourself does not have to be a perfect or limiting process - eat food that fuels and nourishes your body but also listen to what it needs. Social Self-Love:

Key Characteristics: Self-Empowerment and Self-Respect

This might be a particularly hard form of self-love for the very extroverted individual, or those who gain their energy and joy from being with or helping others. Social self-love is taking note when you need to say no to someone, or setting a boundary. When we realize that our sense of happiness and worth comes from within and not from others, that is true self-love. 

Emotional Self-Love:

Key Characteristics: Self-Awareness and Self-Esteem

Emotional self-love is recognizing and providing for your own emotional needs. Many of us may suffer from issues with depression or anxiety, or we may neglect our own emotional needs for the sake of others. Practicing emotional self-love means recognizing and prioritizing yourself and how you’re feeling that day. Mental Self-Love:

Key Characteristics: Forgiveness of self and of others

Self-Love is crucial for our mental well-being as we move through the trials and tribulations of life. Self-Forgiveness is sometimes the last step or milestone on the journey towards self-love as it can often be the hardest to do. It takes time, patience, and a readiness to let go of past hurts and guilt. However, once we take that step, we will then be ready to forgive others and move forward.


Spiritual Self-Love:

Key Characteristics: Seeking Guidance and Community

There are many ways to give yourself spiritual self-love. Whether it is through mantras, affirmations, prayers, meditation, or energies - find a way that awakens your soul. Relinquish your burden and allow yourself healing! Finding guidance through the support of otherworldly powers and the forces of nature will feed your inner self, and create opportunities for deep self-love. Seeking community for support is also a way of showing yourself love.  So be sure to reach out to those that can help walk the path with you.
