5 Small Things You Can Do To Create Change

5 Small Things You Can Do To Create Change

This month we are all about focusing on change which I know can be a tricky thing for people to handle. Many of us try to avoid change at all costs and I get it, change can feel very much like a big and permanent thing. So, let’s start small! Let’s get ourselves used to the idea of change, to see that there are very small things that we can do to create the life we want for ourselves, and out of any possible rut we might be stuck in.

1. Change up one small step in your routine once a week.

This could be something like waiting to check your email after your coffee, or incorporating a morning stretch into your routine, or maybe even sleeping in a bit once a week. Grab your coffee and think about what you’d like to add to your morning routine!

2. Switch up your route to work when possible (even if it’s just commuting from your bed to your desk!)

For some of us, the longest and possibly most monotonous part of the day is our commute to work. If you go by car, take a different route to change up your surroundings. If you’re going by public transportation, make sure to mix up a new playlist or podcast once a week or so to keep things fresh. Sitting there to get from point A to point B can be exhausting but by adding in a few changes when possible we can try to keep things fresh, and refreshing.

 - And this is important even for those who are working remotely!  -

My best advice to our remote worker community is to try to create some space between where you work and where you live. Even if your commute is from your bed to your desk, try to switch up your routine between or even move your space (if possible) to a different part of your house than your bed or living room. Remember that home should be a safe place to enjoy your time!

3. Have one short conversation with someone who makes you smile

Everyday life can be a bit isolating, so try to make a change and include one social experience into your routine. It doesn’t have to be a daily exchange or even a big plan. It could be a short phone call or text exchange with someone who makes you smile.

4. Switch up one beverage in your day

This has less to do about health and more about making small changes to give you something to look forward to. If you are someone who drinks coffee or soda all day, try to switch one of those beverages to a different alternative. Make a cup of tea instead, or have a smoothie - it’s a small thing but it can make a big difference in your mood.

5. Leave time each day for a self-care activity

One small thing that I have personally changed in my daily routine is leaving around 15 minutes a day for a self-care activity. It doesn’t have to be the same activity each week but I find that doing something like this for myself each day has completely improved my mood and how I treat myself. Whether I am working on a new hobby or project, journaling, or doing my skincare routine - this is a purposeful change I make to show myself love and care.
